From Tech Executive to Trusted Local Business Owner: Bob Lee’s Entrepreneurial Reboot

After a long and accomplished career leading software engineering teams and launching large-scale tech initiatives, Bob Lee faced a rare challenge: what comes after corporate success?

For a brief time, he tried retirement. But it didn’t take long before the itch to solve problems and build something new returned. That spark led Bob to launch CMIT Solutions of North Oakland and Walnut Creek, where he now brings enterprise-level expertise to small and midsize businesses in his community.

Rewriting the Script: From Executive to Entrepreneur
Bob’s background spans Fortune 500 firms, high-growth startups, and senior leadership roles in the software world. But transitioning from high-level strategy to running a local business gave him something he hadn’t experienced in years — direct connection to the people he serves.

“Working with local businesses has been one of the most rewarding parts of this new chapter,” Bob says. “It’s not just about solving technical problems — it’s about helping real people protect and grow what they’ve built.”

Why a Tech-Driven Franchise Made Sense
When considering his next move, Bob evaluated several franchise models — from boutique fitness to pet services. But CMIT Solutions stood out for its alignment with his skill set. With a strong focus on technology services and a scalable business model, it offered the ideal mix of independence and structure.

“It’s a great match for my background, but it also pushes me to grow in new ways,” Bob explains.

Learning to Lead Differently
One of the biggest shifts in Bob’s day-to-day life? Getting closer to customers and learning the art of local relationship-building. In the corporate world, teams often act as a buffer between leaders and clients. Now, Bob’s front and center — managing accounts, educating clients, and staying hands-on with solutions like cybersecurity, cloud strategy, and digital infrastructure.

He’s also become a myth-buster of sorts, helping business owners understand common tech misconceptions — especially around cloud security and data backups.

Navigating Sales as an Introvert
Despite his years in leadership, Bob faced a personal learning curve when it came to sales. But instead of trying to become the loudest voice in the room, he embraced a quieter strength: active listening.

“People don’t always need a hard pitch,” he says. “They need to feel heard. That’s what builds trust.”

Building a Business — and a Network
For Bob, growing a business has meant getting involved. He’s active in professional groups, business associations, and local service clubs, and he credits much of his early momentum to genuine, in-person networking.

While he’s experimented with a range of marketing strategies, nothing has compared to building meaningful connections with business owners in the community — many of whom have become long-term clients.

Backed by a Nationwide Team
Though Bob operates independently, he emphasizes the value of being part of a larger network. With access to hundreds of peers and national-level resources, he’s able to bring the best of both worlds to his clients: local service, national support.

“It adds credibility,” he says. “And it gives me peace of mind knowing I’m never alone when facing a new challenge.”

Staying Balanced — On and Off the Bike
Outside of work, Bob is a dedicated cyclist — a hobby that brings focus, clarity, and the occasional business breakthrough. “It’s where I go to recharge,” he says. “Some of my best ideas come to me on the road.”

That same discipline fuels his business: consistent effort, daily progress, and a mindset of continuous improvement.

Wisdom for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
To those thinking about starting a business, Bob offers clear-eyed advice:

  • Set goals that stretch you, but don’t chase shortcuts.
  • Embrace learning — especially in areas outside your comfort zone.
  • Try new tactics, but don’t be afraid to pivot if something isn’t working.
  • And most of all, give it time. Sustainable success doesn’t happen overnight.

Bob’s journey is a reminder that the next chapter doesn’t have to follow the expected script. For those willing to apply their skills in new ways and stay open to growth, entrepreneurship can offer something truly powerful: the chance to build a business with purpose.
