In the fast-moving tech world, making a massive career pivot can feel like stepping onto a whole new planet. For Zen Piotrowski, president of CMIT Solutions of Pittsburgh South, stepping away from an incredible 30-plus-year corporate career wasn’t about slowing down. It was about proving he could build a powerhouse entirely for himself.
Before launching his franchise in June 2017, Zen was playing at the absolute highest levels of the tech industry. We are talking about the guy who led IBM’s IT Service Management and cloud offerings for the Americas and casually closed a single, record-breaking $410 million deal with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He had already helped scale a software startup from $15 million to over $200 million.
When he retired from IBM, corporate partners practically begged him to keep consulting. But Zen had a different plan. “I had built businesses for more companies than just IBM,” Zen says. “I knew how to sell, and I certainly understood technology. I thought it’d be nice to do that for myself.”

The “SMB Shock”: Fighting the Myth of Tech Immunity
Transitioning from corporate titans to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) brought an unexpected reality check. In the corporate world, everyone knows they need robust IT and airtight cybersecurity. In the SMB space? Not so much.
“The only surprise I had is that a lot of customers didn’t understand why they needed an MSP (Managed Service Provider),” Zen admits. “There is almost an ignorance or avoidance when talking about cybersecurity risks. You get business owners who say, ‘Nobody cares about my data, it’s just not that important.'”
To combat this, Zen’s team leads with education, kicking off every prospect relationship with a rigorous risk and vulnerability assessment. The results are often eye-opening. For example, during a recent scan for a company that actively boasted on its website about data security, Zen found exposed passwords and massive, unchecked vulnerabilities.

The Power of the Franchise Network: Going Global from Pittsburgh
While Zen had the skills to launch an independent IT firm, he chose CMIT Solutions for two massive advantages: leveraging vendor relationships and the baked-in culture of franchise camaraderie.
That camaraderie paid off massively in 2023 when a company based in Belgium approached Zen to help them onboard a major US acquisition. The client had locations in Pittsburgh, but also in Arizona, California, and Houston. They needed everything up, running, and completely secure in the middle of the week.
Instead of flying his local team across the country, Zen picked up the phone.
“I was able to do that by contacting owners in Arizona and California, where we worked together to go after those locations,” Zen explains. “We worked around the clock that first week to get everything going. I had technicians from multiple locations all working with us to make that happen.”
Back at home, Zen credits much of his operational success to his superstar senior technician, Bob Hanson. Bob famously keeps a client’s 25-year-old operational technology running smoothly at a major manufacturing plant. This was a legacy system that the client’s previous multi-person IT team refused to touch out of fear they would break it permanently.

Pulling Back the Curtain on Ransomware Horror Stories
When Zen talks about cybersecurity, he doesn’t pull punches. He wants business owners to understand the visceral reality of a ransomware attack.
“It’s horrific. It’s sheer panic,” Zen says. Today’s international cybercriminals aren’t just kids in hoodies. Instead, they operate as highly organized, multi-trillion-dollar syndicates complete with their own HR departments.
Lately, hackers have pivoted away from encrypting data and toward pure extortion: stealing sensitive data and threatening to release it publicly just to embarrass the company. The average ransom is well over $1.2 million. Zen warns of a massive legal trap that most business owners completely miss:
“If you pay that ransom to a company that’s on the US terrorist watch group list, you could face a fine from the United States of $1.2 million per occurrence for paying those guys. You might find yourself bargaining with your district attorney to not take you to court.”
According to Zen, the absolute weakest point in any cybersecurity defense isn’t the software; it’s people. Because 80% to 90% of attacks start with a basic business email compromise, educating employees is half the battle.

Leading the Charge into Managed AI Services
While many IT providers are paralyzed by the hype and complexity of Artificial Intelligence, Zen is already selling managed AI services to his clients.
He started with Microsoft Copilot but quickly realized the entry cost (averaging around $90 per user per month when factoring in all prerequisites) was a heavy lift for SMBs. Looking for a better solution, Zen adopted the Hats AI platform.
Hats AI gives businesses secure access to over 68 large language models within a completely enclosed fence. This means confidential company data and intellectual property are never leaked to the public. The kicker? It costs an average of just $15 a month per user.
Zen advocates a strict “crawl, walk, run” approach to AI. His team trains clients to start with daily micro-tasks, like fine-tuning client emails or summarizing complex data sets, before moving on to building custom AI agents.
“There are so many statistics out there that companies are using AI but aren’t seeing any returns,” Zen notes. “That’s because they aren’t using any discipline to pick a project and measure the return on investment.”
And what is his advice to competing IT providers who haven’t jumped on the AI train yet? Zen laughs: “To our competitors, I tell them: stay away from AI, it’s too risky!”

Rapid Fire with Zen Piotrowski
-
Biggest myth about cybersecurity: “That I don’t need to worry about it.”
-
Most overrated tech buzzword right now: “The cloud.”
-
AI: Overhyped, underhyped, or exactly right? “Exactly right. If you’re not paying attention, you’re going to be left behind. But you have to do it right.”
-
Best part of working with Pittsburgh clients: “Pittsburgh clients are realistic. They’re down-to-earth, pleasant to work with, and they’re real people. As long as you’re honest with them, they’ll do business with you.”

Final Thoughts
From multi-hundred-million-dollar corporate deals to protecting local Pittsburgh businesses, Zen Piotrowski’s blueprint for success comes down to a proactive defense and flawless execution. For Zen, the future of IT isn’t about waiting to see what happens next. It is about building the infrastructure, deploying the AI, and making sure you have a battle-tested plan before the storm hits.
